Boyle Heights Cold Storage Warehouse Fire

Los Angeles, California

Incident Summary

On June 17, 2026, a fire ignited at a cold storage warehouse in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles. The fire burned for over a week. Firefighters could not safely enter the interior because the roof was resting on 50-foot-tall steel racks holding approximately 85 million pounds of frozen food, creating a severe structural collapse risk. First responders used exterior water cannons, helicopters, and drones to locate and extinguish hot spots from the outside. Early in the incident, responders removed ammonia and other refrigerants to limit hazardous material exposure. An initial shelter-in-place order was issued due to smoke and the potential risk of an ammonia line rupture.

Facility Description

The facility, operated by Lineage, is a 500,000-square-foot building dedicated to food logistics and cold storage. The building envelope contained thick insulation standard for cold storage environments, and the roof was equipped with an array of solar panels.

Speculation on Potential Causes

Local officials have indicated the fire may have started while subcontractors were performing work on the rooftop solar panels.

Cold storage facilities often use thick combustible insulation. Applying principles of system dynamics, the facility's thick combustible insulation acted as a highly insulated control volume. This material provided a continuous fuel source while simultaneously trapping heat and preventing the mass transfer of suppression water to the combustion zone. If a thermal event or electrical fault occurred during rooftop work, this thermal inertia and physical barrier would allow the fire to propagate within void spaces for an extended duration.
